When Ramsgate harbour was being constructed in the
1700s, the architects chose to use Purbeck rock as the base construction
material. The quarrying left a huge open area in the Dorset cliffs, today known
as Dancing Ledge. Much of the original stone is still in place over 200 years
later, showing just how long-lasting this rock is.
