If you’re planning to extend or remodel a rockery, the
similarity to Sussex stone means these irregular pieces of York rockery can
easily be added to local gardens. They’re also naturally more blocky than our
Purbeck and Irish limestone, so they work really well if you’re after a
terraced effect.
*Here’s a second similarity we found. Legend says that in
the time of Alfred the Great, Viking raiders on the Sussex coast stole the bell
from Bosham Church. Their ship sank over the Bosham Deep, and the bell is said
to answer underwater whenever the new church bells peal out. In Whitby,
Yorkshire, a similar story is told of the bells of Whitby Abbey: confiscated by
Henry VIII and destined for London, they instead sank to the bottom of the sea
and apparently still ring in the currents on still nights.
